In the fall of 2019 I started building swings, a practice I’ve come to think of as physical graffiti, installing them in public with or without permission. The act of building a swing is a gesture toward the essential value of play and joy. It is also an investigation into how public space can be imagined, and a form of encouragement to engage in remaking our surroundings.
I document this practice through film, photography, and writing. To date, swings have been hung on a farm, under a bridge & just above a stream, on an abandoned pier turned unofficial city park, from trestle lines over a defunct train line, within a protest encampment, from a tree in a yard art sculpture show, and at a city park by invitation.
